County, city dedicate historic marker

On Monday, Sept. 19, Clay County and the City of Green Cove Springs dedicated the new Florida Historical Marker at the childhood home of Augusta Savage on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Green Cove Springs.

The Green Cove Springs native and sculptor was one of the leaders in the Harlem Renaissance from the 1910s through 1930s, often considered the golden age of African American art.

Clay County Commissioner Kristen Burke said it was an honor to recognize the achievements of the Clay County native. “This historical marker reflects the importance the City of Green Cove Springs places on its heritage and allows the stories of the places and people that created the Florida we all enjoy today to be told and remembered.”
