NYPD retiree joins Green Cove Springs police force

Green Cove Springs Police Chief John Guzman swore in a New York Police Department retiree as one of the newest officers on the police force during the city council’s Oct. 18 meeting.

Guzman said James White grew up in Yonkers and joined NYPD in 2001. He was part of the department’s 911 search and recovery effort. His experience also included serving warrants in a housing bureau and working as a detective in the Bronx.

The 5-year-old daughter of Green Cove Springs Police Officer James White, Layla, pins on her father’s badge after he was sworn in during the October 18 city council meeting.

“He retired in June of 2021 and moved to St. Johns, Florida, the day after retiring,” Guzman said.

The chief added that White joined the Green Cove Springs agency in August and recently completed his training period.

Guzman also swore in Eric Hernandez, who began his law enforcement career in a South Carolina police department.

Hernandez worked as an analyst for the Clay County Sheriff’s Office before joining Green Cove Springs Police.
