Springs council praises staff

Green cove Springs City Council members gave their workers glowing reviews following Hurricane Ian’s pass to the city’s east.

Mayor Matt Johnson led the way, noting the professionalism of City Manager Steve Kennedy and his entire staff, including public works and the city’s police force.

“They were poised and ready to handle the storm,” the mayor said.

Council Member Ed Gaw zeroed in on the city’s electric utility, saying the operation has transformed from a weakness for the city into a strength.

“That’s quite an accomplishment,” he said. “I’ve never been prouder of Green Cove.”

Gaw said several residents told him their lights didn’t even flicker as winds swept through the area.

“That’s something to be proud of,” he said.

Council Member Thomas Smith added that even though the city did not experience the most severe impacts of the storm, it was prepared for the worst.

Council Member Steven Kelley said he viewed Hurricane Ian as a test for the city’s electric department, and Director Andy Yeager and his staff passed with flying colors.

Vice Mayor Connie Butler said the city’s performance during the storm reflects strong leadership.

Butler added that Kennedy’s working relationship with county officials strengthened the city’s response to the storm.
