Superintendent touts district achievements

Clay county Schools Superintendent David Broskie gave the Green Cove Springs Rotary Club an overview of the district’s achievements during the club’s Monday, October 24 meeting in Penny Farms.

The superintendent said the district is in Florida’s Top 10 and that the website Niche.com lists Clay as the fifth-best district in the state.

He also noted that the current Florida Teacher of the Year: Melissa Matz was a teacher at Lakeside Middle School before embarking on her one-year term as an ambassador for Florida education.

Broski said that with 40,000 students and an average of two parents per household, the district touches or impacts the lives of more than half of Clay County’s population.

The superintendent also went over the district’s instructional vision. The four components of the vision are -1- student engagement, -2- demonstration of understanding, -3- academic ownership and -4- rigorous grade-level content.

Broskie said the district is committed to civics and career training noting that the district now has over 40 career and technical education programs. He said 11,000-plus students have earned 2,325 industry certifications.

The superintendent also went over the district’s plans for growth, noting that over the next 10 years, the school system projects a 24.6% increase in students.

Broskie said it takes 18 months and $40 million to construct a new elementary school.
